Everything You Need To Know About Engineering Colleges, Courses, and Preparation Tips

One of the most popular career options in India is pursuing the engineering course. Engineering is a science involving building, designing and usage of machines, structures and engines. The addition of streams as well as the steady growth of industries within the last few years within the sector has developed. The economy opened up over the last two decades, giving students the opportunity to choose from a wide range of career choices.

Eligibility criteria to apply for engineering

Before applying, the student needs to ask himself whether engineering right for him. Engineering is a paramount profession, and not a bandwagon that anyone can hitch a ride on. Parents and teachers need to realize the importance of a student’s aptitude. In order to secure admission to Engineering Colleges in India, it is mandatory for you to have passed the 10+2 board’s exam with subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics, while taking computer science as an additional subject can help during the course.

Entrance Exams

Securing seats in one of the top engineering colleges require huge amount of hard work and excellent scores in the respective engineering Entrance Exam in India. These courses get filled in the primary rounds of counselling, after the result date.

Pursuing these courses, can help you with job opportunities. These courses are very bright and some of the most reputed organizations or industries recruit fresh graduates as well as experienced engineers from the above fields. There are certain entrance exams you need to give before you can apply for a B.Tech degree:

  1. GATE: Candidates, completed or will complete their Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology or Master’s degree in any relevant science subject from a recognized University or institution are eligible for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or
  2. JEE Mains: Candidates get 3 attempts for JEE Main exam, formerly known as AIEEE and it is compulsory for all the candidates appearing to pass in at least 5 subjects with the Combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as their core subjects, Language and any other subject in their class XII examinations.
  3. JEE Advanced: Candidates qualifying in the JEE Main entrance exam and are amongst the top candidates who are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced entrance examination. Candidates normally get 2 attempts for JEE Advanced exams.
  4. WBJEE: Candidates need to pass the 10+2 examination with the subjects, Mathematics and Physics along with any one of Biotechnology or Chemistry or Computer Application or Biology or Computer Science as mandatory subjects with individual pass marks secured. For the general category at least 45% marks and in case of candidates belonging to reserved category 40%, is required in all the three subjects taken together.
  5. KIITEE: Candidates who passed or appeared in 10+2 standard examination with at least 60% marks in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics taken together, in the same year are eligible to apply for B.Tech and M.Tech degrees.
  6. AIEEA The candidates under General and UPS Categories needs to pass and obtain not less than 50% and the candidates under SC, ST, and PH categories require 40% marks in 10+2examination. Any candidate failing to qualify in the 12th board examination is not eligible for admission.

Engineering Courses offered in India

Once you decide to pursue engineering, the next step you need is to choose which one of the many engineering courses you wish to study for four long years. The engineering Courses in India has its own merits and demerits.

Today some engineering courses are relatively new, while some engineering courses belong to a vintage class. New branches of engineering courses have been derived from specific areas of those old courses. There are approximately 415 courses that come under engineering and a person is only eligible to pursue it after 12th.

Opportunities to study across the country

The affiliated Universities offer admissions, spread across the states of Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, etc. There are approximately 19800 colleges offering engineering degrees, so that a student can take admission throughout India. While the first and second year of the bachelor’s degree have common studies, a specialization on that specific course is prudent, after the completion of the semesters.

This is an important step, as not only can you gain in depth knowledge in the chosen stream, which may determine career growth and the companies that could hire you. Core engineering specialization courses include:
