Drain Clog Home Remedies

Drain clogs can be extremely irritating for a homeowner. Whether it is food cleaned off of a plate, solidified grease, soap, or even hair, drain clogs are disgusting yet unavoidable. But don’t worry! You don’t have to waste extra money by calling a plumber. There are numerous strategies that you can try yourself! In this article, we will talk about various home remedies that will help you to dislodge drain clogs.

Baking soda and vinegar mixture

Baking soda and vinegar are the most common ways to dislodge a drain clog. By pouring half a cup of both baking soda and vinegar and leaving it overnight (with a lid top), you can resolve the problem of a clogged drain. After a while, remove the lid and pour boiling hot water down the drain. Baking soda and vinegar together cause a reaction such that breaks down the accumulated grease and other blockages. Boiling water helps by washing the broken-up clog away.

Use tweezers

Tweezers are extremely helpful for drains in the bathtub. After removing the drain cover, use the tweezers. Tweezers pull put the clumps of hair out conveniently. Your tub, therefore, drains more easily.

Salt and boiling water mixture

Boiling water makes the process of removing clogs easy. But if you add salt to boiling water, it becomes even better. While hot water breaks down the grease, salt helps to clean out the drain more efficiently. Your pipes are, therefore, emptied.

Ice cubes made up of vinegar

Vinegar ice cubes are excellent to prevent a possible clog from occurring. You can freeze white vinegar by pouring it in ice cube trays. By crushing some of these ice cubes into your garbage disposal (once a week), any potential buildup of waste doesn’t happen. You can also cover your bathtub or sink’s drains as a pre-emptive measure.

Dishwashing liquid soap

Dishwashing liquid soap accompanied with boiling water is an excellent way to dislodge clogged drains. By pouring them down the drain, the dishwashing liquid will counter grease, and the boiling water will loosen it up. But remember! Dishwashing liquid is harmful if you use it in a garbage disposal. When you switch the garbage disposal on, chemical reactions occur. These can be extremely dangerous. If you see this happening, you must call the plumber then! The plumber will then fix this issue by referring to his professional expertise. The plumber will manage to do this without disturbing your plumbing.

Consider using a plunger

A plunger is a force cup that is also known as a ‘plumber’s friend.’ Make it your friend as well!  It is made up of a rubber suction cup. This cup is attached to a long shaft that is typically made up of wood or plastic. This tool will aid you to clear blockages and clogs that occur not only in your toilets but also in your drains! Therefore, you should purchase plungers for your drains as well. Just make sure you know which plunger is for which use!
