5 Tips Every Elementary School Teacher Needs to Know

As an elementary school teacher, you understand the daily challenges and struggles. From following a strict curriculum to implementing classroom management techniques, you may need tips for new teachers and seasoned veterans alike.

But how do you overcome stress related to lesson planning, evaluations, and conflicts among students, to name a few?

If you’re wondering how to be a good teacher, then look no further. This article covers the 5 tips every elementary teacher needs to know in order to be successful in the classroom.

  1. Communicate

Start the year off with an introductory letter to parents and guardians, greeting them and giving them insight into your classroom and expectations throughout the year. Communicate on a regular basis through emails, letters home, and signatures in day planners. Be sure to respond to emails and phone calls as soon as possible and to follow up with parents and guardians as needed.

  1. Don’t Talk Over Students

When teaching elementary school, don’t yell to be heard over students. This sends the wrong message to the children and can hurt your voice. Instead, work with students on ways to use hand signals when you need their attention.

Consider putting your hand in the air when you want your class to settle down and listen. As students take notice of this, they will raise their hand in return, signaling other students to quiet down and focus on your direction.

Make sure to praise students individually and as a group for their efforts to become quiet and listen.

  1. Be Consistent

Children need consistency to help them throughout the day. When disciplining elementary children, have clear rules and consequences in your classroom. Be consistent with these rules, as it helps children to understand expectations and take control of their behavior.

The more predictable your classroom is, the more comfortable your students will be and the more success you’ll have with behavior management.

  1. Be Kind at All Times

No matter what the issue, be kind and respectful of your students at all times. A nurturing classroom environment is the best kind for a child to grow and thrive in.

When students act out, they may expect you to be angry as a result. Instead, talk to them in a calm, caring tone. Find out what the issue is and ways you can help them solve the problem.

Show them you care about them and their feelings, as this will help them to settle down when they’re upset.

  1. Be Creative in Your Lesson Plans

One of the best ways to keep a child’s interest is through creative and engaging lesson plans. Create lessons that have hands-on activities, such as student learning centers where they can access their creative side. Allow students to work independently and in groups, and allow for extension activities for those who complete their work early.

For science activities, consider a state of matter worksheet where children work in groups to identify solids, liquids, and gases.

Success as an Elementary School Teacher

In order to be a successful elementary school teacher, remember that patience, creativity, and consistency are key. Treat all children equally and keep a positive attitude throughout the day. Children are like sponges, and it’s your responsibility to help them learn and grow.
