Angioma is benign tumor that consists of small blood vessels. They usually appear at or near the surface of the skin. Angiomas may appear anywhere on the body, and aren’t considered dangerous. However, they may be present as symptoms of another more serious disorder, such as cirrhosis.
Some of the different types include: spider angiomas, cherry angiomas, and senile angiomas. A spider angioma is a type of angioma found slightly below the skin’s surface, often containing a central red spot and reddish extensions which radiate outwards like a spider’s web. Angiomas may appear anywhere on the body, and aren’t considered dangerous depending on their location
Causes
- Angioma is a benign, fairly common skin growth that varies in size. They can occur almost anywhere on the body but usually develop on the trunk. The exact cause is unknown. Some of the possible causes of angioma include alcoholic liver disease which causes spider angiomas and cirrhosis of the liver.
- Cherry angiomas may be caused by the presence of an internal malignancy.
- Cherry angioma can also be caused by exposure to mustard gas or 2-butoxyethanol.
Signs and Symptoms
There are no symptoms for angioma
- A red dome-shaped lesion usually occurring on the trunk and formed as a result of the weakening of the capillary wall.
- Cherry angiomas are made up of clusters of tiny capillaries at the surface of the skin, and range in color from bright red to purple.
- Angiomas are commonly found on the face, neck, upper part of the trunk and arms
Treatment
- Electrosurgery: is the application of a high-frequency electric current to destroy angioma.
- Cryosurgery: is an application of extreme cold to destroy angioma.
- Electrodesiccation : is a treatment by using terminal electrode with a small sparking distance to destroy angioma lessions.
- Liquid nitrogen therapy: is a cold, liquefied gas that is sprayed on the skin with a spray gun.
- Pulsed dye laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): is a newer treatment used for by useing an organic dye as the lasing medium, usually as a liquid solution.
