Aging Spots

Aging spots are also known as brown spots, liver spots, sun spots, Freckles, lentigos, or senile/solar lentigines caused by sun exposure that damaged skin, they range in color from light brown to red or black and are located in areas most often exposed to the sun, particularly the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead, and the head if bald. Aging spot appear when being in the sun unprotected too long, skins are subjected more to more sun damage, our skin’s natural ability to protect of UV rays from the sun begins to deteriorate, and we start seeing the development of age spots

Do you need to treat aging spot?

If you notice a lesion or brown spots on your skin, you should see a dermatologist to determine if they are cancerous. You may need to have a biopsy performed to determine if the lesion benign or not, if it’s a benign; there are some laser treatments to remove them. You don’t have to treat aging spot, it’s a cosmetic concern

Aging Spots Treatment

Laser Treatment: is a very effective treatment of removing aging spot with not much pain. This often requires at least 6 to 8 treatments several weeks apart and has lead to permanent scarring in some cases. If you choose this method, make sure your clinic does a test patch somewhere discreet before using the laser on your face. Avoidance of sun exposure is a good way that gets aging spot free.

Cryotherapy: is applying liquid nitrogen to the spot and freezes it off. Dermatologist performs needed to have a esthetics license. There is little to no risk of scarring with this method and many times it can be treated with one or two visits. This method is much more affordable than the laser but it is difficult to find skin centers that offer this technique, although with the advent of the “Cryoprobe,” it is becoming easier to find. If this interests you, do a search on the web for the term Cryotherapy or Cryoprobe in your area .

Topical products: the most effective ingredient in skin lighteners is Hydroquinone, which has been available for many years to reduce skin discoloration. The side effects of hydroquinone occur rarely in users and are primarily that of skin thickening on areas of use, or the skin turning a bluish brown color in darker skinned people. A formula of 20% Azelaic Acid is proven to be as effective as 2% Hydroquinone over a longer amount of time. Therefore products with Azelaic Acid may take a bit longer to be effective. Retinoids and Retinol (forms of Vitamin A) have been well researched and proven effective in not only creating collagen in the skin, but in lightening dark spots due to its exfoliant properties.

Chemical Peel: works by removing the outer layers of your skin giving the skin a smooth and clean look. However, they only work on superficial skin and not on the deep tissues. It cannot remove wrinkles. There are other non-surgical methods such as Botox that can reduce wrinkles but works only for a short period of time.

A chemical peel is performed by applying a liquid chemical solution to the face. The chemical solution then slowly burns off the upper layer of the skin leaving the leftover skin exposed. This will stimulate the skin to produce younger looking skin. The skin would appear younger looking, firmer and slightly pinker. The stronger the chemical, the deeper it will penetrate but the chances of scarring and infection increases. In addition, an alteration of skin color may be noticeable if the procedure is not done correctly.

Natural Treatment: A good way in making your skin healthy is applying acidic fruit juice directly on the brown patches on your skin. This process can be use several period times until the spot will fade. Some fruit you can use are lemon, papaya, and cranberry or any acidic fruit available in the market. Rub a small slice of the acidic fruit directly to your skin and let it stay for a few minutes and rinse your skin with water. Vitamin a and vitamin c are some of the ingredient in any commercial treatment for aged spot.

Dermabrasion : is another type of procedure that involves using a wire brush or a bur containing diamond particles that ’sander’ the upper layer of the skin. It usually takes about 90 minutes to perform, depending how much skin they want to treat. The patient is given either local anesthetic or undergo general anesthesia. After the sanding procedure is finished, the skin is cleaned and a dressing is applied. For the next week, the skin will be swollen and red. A scab is formed over the treated area and the skin begins it’s healing process.
